Timeline of the Mandate
Deep past → treaty pause → the phases of a permanent southern civilization.
Deep past
Gondwana breakup. Antarctica as wanderer. Ice sheets wax and wane. Ice-free windows exist in deep time — the continent has not always been a freezer.
Speculative civilization layers. Map anomalies, Hancock-adjacent frames, hollow-earth campfire. Filed as OPERATIONAL MYTH — useful for mood and archive design, not for purchase orders.
Contact & claim era
Discovery races & heroic age. Sealers, explorers, poles as trophies. Logistics is everything; it always will be.
Claim theater. Neuschwabenland expedition; overlapping sovereign cosplay; war interrupts science.
Highjump → IGY → permanent stations. Industrial-scale polar ops become normal. Deep Freeze continuity. Nukey Poo proves fission-on-ice is thinkable.
Treaty enters force. Pause button on sovereignty; science as the legal fiction that keeps the lights on. Clock on home page counts the years.
Near future — Mandate phases
Directed vision, not a schedule you can sue over. Each phase unlocks the next with energy, food, and corridors.
Autonomous sensors, denser science towns, honest site surveys. Map bedrock, katabatic corridors, geothermal candidates, blue-ice fields. No city yet — only knowing.
Permanent energy + food demos. Microreactor (or equivalent dense power) + sealed agri loop that feeds a winter-over crew without heroics. Compost train online. Livestock only if the loop math works.
First bored under-ice / rock routes. Port ↔ interior node. Freight stops being only a traverse prayer. Habitats go underground-primary.
~1,000-person habitats. Medicine, machine shop, school-as-lab, stillsuit lockers, southern cloud racks. Culture = engineering culture.
Multi-node network. Local industry, redundant power, agri districts, archive vaults. Travel between sietches without leaving the continent’s own grid.
Self-sustaining polity-ish entity. Breakaway complete in the only sense that matters: it can say “no” to a bad resupply year and still do science in the morning.
Late SCOUT / early ANCHOR dreams
Stations exist. Micros are real products. Boring is a mature industry. The missing reagent is directed will + capital + a culture that wants underground labs more than ski lifts.
