Documented: Richard E. Byrd’s polar career; Operation Highjump (1946–47) — large US Navy Antarctic exercise; later Operation Deep Freeze as enduring US presence.
Myth-cycle: “lands beyond the pole,” diary legends, secret encounters, maps that continue past the ice. Soft-disclosure fan readings of postwar ops.
Neuschwabenland & southern redoubt myths
Documented: 1938–39 German Antarctic expedition; naming of Neuschwabenland; territorial claim theater of the era.
Myth-cycle: Base 211, UFO-adjacent escapes, postwar “southern redoubt,” frozen continuity governments. Treat as folklore complex — high campfire value, low engineering value, excellent map labels.
Filed here because the breakaway imagination keeps rediscovering it. Catalog ≠ endorse.
Maps that “shouldn’t exist”
- Piri Reis — partial Atlantic/South America sheet; ice-free south readings in alternative history.
- Oronteus Finaeus — Antarctic-like mass with rivers/coasts in some interpretations.
- Buache — two-island Antarctica under ice hypotheses.
- Hancock-adjacent frame: Younger Dryas shocks, lost ice-age knowledge, cartographic ghosts of a prior technical culture.
Hollow Earth / polar openings
Symmes holes, Poe’s Pym, Verne echoes, inner-sun fantasies, Shaver-adjacent subterranea. Maximum eccentricity shelf.
Engineer’s translation: geothermal, subglacial voids, and bored sietches are the secular hollow earth. Dig down; ignore the cartoon mantle cities unless you’re writing fiction.
Anomalous-adjacent science (real weirdness anchors)
- Lake Vostok and other subglacial lakes — sealed ecosystems, contamination ethics, drill tech.
- Blood Falls — iron-rich brine, geomicrobiology that looks like horror and is better than horror.
- Ice cores — climate archive as scripture for engineers who believe in data.
- Radar “structures” — always check papers; still fun as Map Room layers.
- Micrometeorite fields on blue ice — science and materials curiosity.
Fiction canon (sacred warnings)
- Lovecraft — At the Mountains of Madness: dig carefully; some archives bite.
- Carpenter — The Thing: biosecurity parable. Trust protocols over vibes.
- Dune (1–4) as soft concurrent myth: desert discipline transposed to ice; stillsuits; sietch as social form; maybe past, maybe future, maybe sideways. This site steals the architecture of devotion to harsh-world engineering, not the sandworms.
